Artistic close-ups have come and gone out of vogue in baseball history, but they have always remained some of the most popular images among collectors. Whether it was the first close-ups of hands that Charles Conlon did in the mid 1910's, or his foray into "eyes" during the 1927 World Series, the close-up representations of individual body parts of our sports heroes are both highly sought after and underrated by collectors today considering what they are... art! This image is one of the more exciting of it's kind we have seen as a photographer from NEA has done a study on the hands of New York Yankees star first baseman Lou Gehrig. We have seen the companion piece to this, also dated 1936 from NEA, showing Gehrig's feet, but this new discovery just pulled from their archive is the one and only survivor of Gehrig's "hands" on the planet. Crystal clear and bold, you can tell within a second that the image is Gehrig by how he fills his jersey and holds his massive body. The hands are clearly those of a left handed player with a mangled catching hand from years and years of use on the diamond. The detail and clarity of this image are unimprovable with the threads of his jersey and wrinkles in his palms visible. One of the finest and most exciting images of the great "Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig that we have ever offered and it is being made available here for the first time ever!
