Rarely do photographs surface that redefine the way you think about the game of baseball and how it was played over 100 years ago, but this image of Ty Cobb sliding into home illustrates how the game was played better than any we have ever seen. The ballpark (Bennett Park) is extremely small and more closely resembles a College Stadium than one fit for major League Baseball, but this is the way it was back in an era where the players and fans were connected in a way that is long gone. Ty Cobb is seen in mid-air as he soars to the plate with his famous hook slide. The catcher is Lou Criger and he is wearing a St. Louis uniform (concretely dating this photo to 1909) and the way he is using his bare hand to tag Ty is something that has been gone from the game for nearly a century, This field level shot makes you feel like you are right there, smelling the grass and hearing the shouts of the fans as they await the umpires decision on this close play. "Safe" was the call according to the back... what would instant replay say? An amazing photograph that redefines the way we think about the game, with crystal clarity and an impressive condition that make the condition flaws inconsequential to the fact that this photo survives! A work of art if there ever was one!
