After the 1966 season the unthinkable happened in New York, Mickey Mantle was no longer in the outfield. After nearly two decades of wear and tear to his body, the team decided to save what they could of Mantle by switching him to a position that required less running, first base. Here, in this symbolic photograph from Don Wingfield, not only is Mantle working at his new position with his famous uniform number looking right back at the camera, but he is doing so under the watchful eye of photographers and his replacement in the outfield, Joe Pepitone. An important and symbolic work of photography in great shape.
