Walt Smallwood had a long career in baseball, but only a couple cups of coffee in the major leagues. He played eight total games for the New York Yankees in 1917 and 1919 and then spent two decades in the minor leagues, bouncing around from place to place. The offered amazing hand colored photograph captures Smallwood in uniform in 1928 with Pueblo and is one of the only images of the player we have ever seen. An extreme prewar rarity, the image itself is also a work of art as it was an early form of color photography in which the piece was printed on porous paper and hand colored by the photographer who has stamped the back. From Smallwood's estate, the image also carries his signature across the front (written in Smallwood's own hand) which only adds to the rarity and overall appeal of the piece. There is a matt around the front which is original and we have left it, but it is loose and can certainly be discarded if the new owner wishes. One of the toughest Yankees players to find quality images of from the 1910's and this one is an absolute beauty, offered here for the first time ever!
