When Frank Filan's photograph of the aftermath of the battle of Tarawa Island hit the states, it shocked people. Even with constant reminders of how deadly WWII was, seeing this image defined the horrors of what was actually going on in the Pacific. While the battle was held in November 1943, this image was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for photography in 1944 making it a special image and one that is coveted by collectors. This particular example was issued in 1954 on the tenth anniversary of the award, but still was produced off the original negative making it an important specimen that has 66 years of age to it. Issued by the Associated Press and stamped on the back with a full paper caption, this is the only vintage example of this photo that we have ever handled!
