During the Great Depression the disabled veterns of WWI asked the government for their bonus' early to help with the economic strain of the times. Today this wuld be a reasonable request and would probably be granted to the soldiers, but in 1932 the world was different. These men protested by setting up camps called "Bonus Camps" and protested in many ways peacefully, similar to the Civil Rights marches of a generation later. The governments response was not good; force and tear gas were used to disperse the crowds and men were actually killed in the process. The offered thought provoking image shows soldiers deploying gas and using live ammunition against the men to drive them away. A dramatic image in great shape, this is one of the only ones like it we have seen and it contains a full paper caption on the back from the International News. A sad chapter in American history that needs to be remembered.
