This most famous photograph from the famed D-Day Invasion of June 6, 1944 is the "Jaws of Death" by Robert Sargent. It shows the door to a Coast Guard landing craft opened and soldiers piling out to fight for the liberation of France. While that photo is famous, there was another image taken by Sargent a few minutes earlier aboard the same craft showing the soldiers huddled in nervous anticipation with Omaha Beach a few miles away on the horizon. What must have been going through the heads of these men as they clutched their guns knowing that their lives could be over in a few moments. This is the only known example of the earlier Sargent image we have ever seen and although this is a c. 1960 re-strike, it is off the original negative and presents beautifully with exceptional clarity. Some light tape stains are present at the top but these can be cleaned up. This is one of the most important WWII images we have ever offered!
