Incredible 1939 photograph as the Yankees Open the Season in New York. As the Yankees rush the field with enthusiasm, something was not right. Lou Gehrig was not his normal self and everybody knew it. While he would play in this game, it was quickly observed by everybody that something was wrong. He would shortly bench himself, be diagnosed with ALS, and announce the devastating news to the General Public ending his career. This photo represents the enthusiasm of the Yankees as a player leading the charge with fingers pointed, perilously stepping on the bats in front of the dugout, leads the players on the field. We believe Gehrig is sixth from the left (we can not be positive as not enough of him is showing), we can easily identify Joe DiMaggio (third from left) as well as other players. Full paper caption on the back as well as stamps from Acme and NEA. Poignant and important Yankee Image!
