George Godfrey could have been a household name had the world been a bit different in the 1920's. He was TWICE the Worlds "Colored Heavyweight Champion" which by many accounts was superior title to that of the white titleholder of the time. He was denied shots at the world title in his prime due to the color of his skin and would have to settle for fame among his own race. He was finally given a shot in 1930 against Primo Carnera but was disqualified unfairly in a fight that most consider to be fixed as Carnera had ties with the Mafia and Godfrey was expendable. A sad era in Boxing History but a great image of one of the best fighters of his time! Condition is quite nice and this appears to be a slightly later restrike c. 1950's.
