The exploits of Jackie Robinson as the man who broke the color barrier and changed the world are well documented. There was another side to Robinson though, one that enabled him to battle through adversity, but that also reared it's ugly head from time to time after 1947 when he lost his temper badly on the field. This image captures the worst of these incidents when he ended the promising career of Davey Williams from the Giants. He had been thrown at by Sal Maglie earlier and laid down a bunt with the hopes that Maglie would be forced to field it and Robinson could take him out. It was Davey Williams though who covered first on the play and Jackie laid him out with a cheap shot that badly injured him, hurting his back and effectively ending his career. Here, with Williams on the ground and maglie nearby, Alvin Dark looks to go after Robinson as he walked back to the dugout. Taken by Barney Stein and stamped on the back, this is the only known image of the play and one that presents in great shape. An important piece of Jackie Robinson photography that tells the other side of the fierce competitor!
