In one of the most important moments in World Series history, Grover Cleveland Alexander came through! Reportedly drunk in the bullpen, manager Rogers Hornsby went with him anyways with a 3-2 lead in the waning moments of Game 7 of the 1926 World Series. The Yankees had the bases loaded and the powerful Tony Lazzeri up to the plate. In a moment that only Hollywood could script, Alexander struck out Lazzeri to preserve the lead and the Series for the Cardinals. In this EXTREMELY rare photo (the only one we know of in vintage form) Lazzeri is seen lunging forward after missing Alexander's pitch and striking out. Despite being a slightly later re-strike (c. 1940's) this is a nice example with a small scuff at the top. An important image from one of the biggest moments in baseball history.
