On Christmas day 1862 near Washington DC a remarkable event happened. Organizers put on a special Christmas dinner for the wounded soldiers of the conflict, feeding 35,000 men who were otherwise in the depths of despair. In one of the most famous photographs of the war, it shows recent amputees and wounded men posing with bunting and an American flag shortly after being struck on the battlefields. While this is a 1920's re-strike, it is a very old specimen of one of the most famous images from the war!
