1927 Photograph of Admiral Richard Byrd's ship "America" as it was being fitted and finalized before what was expected to be the first trans-Atlantic flight. Byrd was the favorite to take the prize and glory associated with being the first to fly from New York to Paris, but the "America" would crash during a practice take-off and while it was being repaired, Charles Lindbergh would succeed and take all the glory! A rare image from the weeks leading up to the moment that the world was changed forever and Admiral Byrd ALMOST became the man who did it! A rare piece of aviation history issued by the International News and with a full paper caption on the back as well.
