Vintage c. 1910 cabinet photograph of a team from Spring Creek (state unknown) possibly in Pennsylvania. This is a high level team, obviously semi professional at the least but likely these boys were paid to play based on the fact that there is a manager posing with his scorebook, a mascot, and some pretty nice equipment. There are nine young men who all look the same and one who is a bit different and stands out immediately as black making this a curiosity for the era. After the 1890's it was essentially unheard of for blacks to play on baseball items with white players as the color line was in full force. Not only was this man playing, he is holding the ball signifying that he was the pitcher! More research is needed but it is highly likely this man, given that he was obviously talented, played in the Negro Leagues at some point and research could indicate a nice find here. The only other clue to his identity is that he is wearing a different hat, meaning he was likely a ringer that was brought in for a tournament or big game. The rest of the players are wearing an "M" on their hats and it appears our mystery man is wearing a dark cap with a "C" or a "G". A fantastic clear image with huge upside for a savvy researcher.
