Billy Southworth Jr. grew up in the limelight. He was the son of a famous player and manager and even had the distinction of being on a baseball card when he was a toddler, on his fathers American Caramel issue in 1921. He would have a pretty distinguished baseball career himself and then became the very first professional athlete to enlist in the War before WWII. He was so handsome that he had movie contracts waiting for him upon the end of the war, but for young Southworth that day never came. Died tragically in 1945 during training flights for the new B-29 super fortress bombers and even though he never made the major leagues, he was the most famous baseball man to die in the War. The offered touching photograph shows Southworth shortly after enlisting (nearly a year before Pearl Harbor) in the cockpit of his plane along with his proud father. One of the most touching and tragic WWII photos out there, this was issued by the International News and stamped on the back with a full paper caption as well.
