When this photographer stood in front of the starting infield of the Chicago White Sox before the start of the World Series in 1919, the fix was already on. Poor Eddie Collins had no idea what was about to transpire, but the three men around him were already planning to lose for money. Flanked by ring leader Chic Gandil at the far right and Buck Weaver and Swede Risberg to each shoulder, the three crooked ballplayers would be joined by five other teammates to seal the fate of the otherwise nearly unbeatable Chicago White Sox. By far the most famous scandal in sports, relatively few images survive from the 1919 World Series with this being one of the only ones we have seen that actually addresses the event. Issued in 1927 when these men were set to appear in court, the photo has a full newspaper article on the back with the date stamp as well. Few images of these guys have survived and this one is pretty nice.
