The early days of WWII were a tough time for baseball players. On the one hand FDR decided to keep the games going for the good of the moral of the country, but there was also immense pressure for players to do their patriotic duty and join the cause. Few images capture this turmoil like this one that captures hank Greenberg behind the cockpit of a fighter plane in military uniform as he chats with Joe DiMaggio who decided to sit out the war and was in town for spring training. Issued by NEA and stamped on the back with a small paper caption as well, this is the only example we have ever seen!
