Willard Hershberger became one of the best catchers in baseball during the late 1930's with the Cincinnati Reds. He is best known today for suffering from mental illness and committing suicide in 1940, but what is not known by most people is that he ALMOST became a New York Yankee! Here he is trying out with the team during spring training and wearing pinstripes before being released by the club. Stamped on the back by the famed Thorne Studios who took most of the really nice Yankees images of the era, this is the ONLY example of Hershberger in pinstripes we know of in the world!
