One of the rarest Hall of Famers to find quality images of from their playing days is Sam Crawford from the Detroit Tigers. His career began in the 19th century as was over before the start of World War I making it the "dark ages" of sorts for Sports Photography and his legacy in the form of photographs is severely lacking. While there are images of him out there, they tend to be multi-player or portrait style with very few taken of this powerful slugger swinging the bat. What we have here is one of the best! Crawford is pictured watching the flight of the ball as he sends it hurling toward the gap. Although this is file stamped 1914, the Tigers used this uniform style from 1908-1912 and the ballpark and Crawford's age lend to the belief that this is a 1910 photo or perhaps even earlier! Silver gelatin beauty is in great condition and it surely ranks among the best the hobby has to offer, in fact this photo original sold in 2014 for $1068!
