1910 Silver gelatin photograph of the captains of the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Athletics as they meet to shake hands before the start of the first World Series game in Philadelphia. Frank Chance, the manager and captain of the Cubs meets Harry Davis of the Athletics before the battle was set to begin in this fantastic staged photograph on the field. While the Cubs are known today as lovable losers, they were a budding dynasty in 1910 and heavy favorites. The pitching of the A's however, led by Plank, Waddell and Bender was just too much. Chance did his part batting .343 but the rest of the team performed miserably. Issued by the Gilliams Press syndicate, this is an extremely early piece of World Series history in pretty nice shape overall considering how easily these photos broke or chipped. This is one of two known examples of this photo with this being the superior example!
