Joe Durham is one of several pioneers that helped break down the color barrier for good after the integration of baseball in 1947. Signed by Boll Veeck after the 1952 season, he moved with the Browns to Baltimore where he became the first black position player in team history (1954) and the first to hit a homer for the Orioles as well. This is an early image from before he was signed into white professional baseball, taken around 1952 when he was a star with the Chicago Giants of the Negro Leagues. An important piece of photography in nice shape overall.
