One of the more enduring baseball images of the 1930's is that of Babe Ruth giving a sick Lou Gehrig an embrace on "Lou Gehrig Day" at the ballpark. Both were out of the game they had dominated a short time earlier and both would be dead in ten years, but when this photo was taken all eyes were on Gehrig. He had been the ultimate symbol of strength and durability in his profession, only to be felled by a terrible microscopic disease. The offered image is a wire photograph but is completely original to 1939 and as such is the only true vintage example we have ever offered. Condition is pretty nice with some light handling wear and the image had the caption clipped off the side.
