Of all the images ever taken of Lou Gehrig, a few stand out among the group that can be categorized as "the best". This one, for several reasons, certainly fits into that category of the top Gehrig photos is the hobby. Taken at Spring Training 1939, Gehrig was set to take his rightful spot among the top players in the game, but something was not right. He was striking out, slow, and had no power left in his bat. Here he takes a mighty Gehrig hack but looks just a bit off. It would take a few months to figure out why, but when this image was taken by famous photographer William C. Greene, Gehrig was already dying and didn't know it. The image would become one that would be used in countless printed publications, some baseball cards, and even would be the figure used by the Yankees on their World Series program cover at the end of the season as a way to honor Gehrig. This is the only example of this famous photograph we have seen offered for sale and is one of only a small handful known to exist and with the image already slabbed by PSA, it is a gem that would fit nicely into even the most advanced collections. An exciting offering of one of the best Gehrig photographs we have ever offered!
