By 1934 rumors were abounding that someone other than babe Ruth might be the best baseball player in the world. With hushed tones the cries of black baseball fans were beginning to be recognized by white fans as well. "Boy that Gibson sure can hit" some would say, while others were afraid to admit what many already knew, Babe Ruth was now the second best baseball player in the game! When the Concordia baseball team was assembled to participate in Venezuela by General Gonzalo Gomez, the first pick to lead the squad was young Josh Gibson, Martin Dihigo would have to settle for second. Here we see the entire Concordia team in uniform ready for the tournament with (13) players in uniform. The imposing figure of Josh Gibson stands at the far right next to the manager while Martin Dihigo poses third from the left. They were not the only stars on the club, it also included Tetelo Vargas, Luis Aparicio Sr., Rap Dixon and Alejandro San among others. Images of Gibson are extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors with only one or two coming up for sale annually. This is a unique new discovery that is being offered here for the first time ever and presenting in almost perfect condition, the photo is clean and precise with a vintage handwritten note in Spanish on the back as well.
