In 1910 the Detroit Tigers took a trip to Cuba to train for their season. It seemed a nice pick because of the climate and established ballparks, but there was another reason they chose this location, they wanted to play the best in preparation for a World Series run! On this particular day, an American photographer who was along for the trip decided to snap a photographic postcard of the pitcher who would oppose Cobb and the Tigers. The man in full uniform, ready to take on world this day was none other than Jose "El Diamonte Negro" Mendez, the best pitcher in Cuba and one of the best in the world. Dating to 1910 as this was part of a small collection of postcards taken during the Tigers tour to the island (we sold the Cobb postcard from the lot in Feb 2017) this represents the only known rookie card of Mendez in the hobby with note to the Punch cigars card, and the only known example of this postcard to have ever surfaced. An exciting baseball card in great condition, this ranks among the most important Negro League finds in recent memory and an incredible opportunity to add a true rookie card of Jose Mendez to even the most advanced collection. The significance of this postcard can not be overstated!
