Roosevelt "Duro" Davis was one of the bright young stars of the Negro Leagues when he took the mound for the St. Louis Stars as a twenty year old in 1924. The next season he would win 17 games and be headed for a long and successful career in the Negro Leagues. When this photograph was taken in 1944, Davis was a forty year old veteran who was still effective, but hanging on through wit and wisdom of the game. An interesting photo as he was pitching here a year before Jackie Robinson was signed but his career stretched back to the earliest days of the league. Oh the stories he could have told! An exceptional double weight specimen that we have never seen before and one that is almost certainly unique.
