In the world of deadball era baseball, it was common for pitchers to blow out their arms and try to reinvent themselves as hitters. A few of them were wildly successful like Babe Ruth and Lefty O'Doul, and others managed to have fine careers off the mound like Smokey Joe Wood. In the case of Pete Schneider, there was no return to the big leagues, but there was a flash of absolute brilliance. He was a promising hurler for the deadball era Reds from 1914-1919, even winning 20 games one year. After he reinvented himself as a hitter though, things got interesting. In a game in 1923 between Vernon (his team) and the Salt Lake City Bees, Schneider hit five homers in a game! You would think this type of attention to go along with consecutive averages of .325, .346 and .360 would get some attention from the big boys, but Schneider never got the call. Offered here is a photograph of Schneider in his uniform from Vernon in the PCL as it was announced that he had clouted five homers and how amazing his hitting was. An impressive image from the International News and stamped on the back with a full paper caption as well.
