After Jackie Robinson integrated baseball in 1947, no team embraced the new pool of talent like Bill Veeck and the Cleveland Indians, especially in the American League. They rushed to sign Larry Doby who would become the first black player in the junior circuit, and followed him with a pipeline of talent that would help them win the 1948 World Series. Here are the defending champs in uniform at the ballpark in a team photograph that while sparce of diversity by todays standards, actually represented quite a few black stars for the era. Led by Satchel Paige, Larry Doby and Luke Easter, they also had Latin star Bobby Avila as well! A nearly perfect image in great shape.
