Absolutely incredible 1938-39 team photograph of the Santa Clara Leopardoes of the Cuban Winter League showing twelve men in full uniform. With all due respect to the other stars on this team, the man who makes this photo is young Josh Gibson in full uniform, completely dominating the image taking center stage on the back row. Few photos of Gibson exist and there are almost never "new" discoveries but this one defies the odds! A completely unique image from a teammates estate, this is a nearly perfect specimen that also does a great job at highlighting just how powerful a man Josh Gibson was! The team wearing their 1937-38 Champions arm patch which clearly dates this image to the next year, which was still very early in Gibson's career. An important piece of baseball history whose significance in the world of sports photography can not be overstated!
