1908 Photograph of sitting President William Howard Taft as he plays a round of golf with his caddie in the foreground holding his clubs. While this photo seems normal by todays standards, it was in fact quite a statement at the time. Taft was the first U.S. President to play golf (or at least admit it since it was viewed as a rich mans sport) and as such he was the first to be photographed with golf clubs. That being said, this is the earliest image of him golfing that exists. We sold a 1909 image of Taft golfing by photographer George Grantham Bain last year which at the time was the oldest known until this image surfaced. A large silver gelatin original with a stamp on the back from photographer William Fawcett as well as the date, this is an important piece of golf and Presidential history! Condition and quality are exceptional with a crease on the far left away from the figure of Taft.
