In what had to seem like a weird twist of fate, Satchel Paige was here besieged by autograph hounds at the ballpark, the white children of the very men and women who kept him relegated to the bush despite having the greatest pitching arm of his era. Taken in 1971 when the baseball world was finally getting around to honoring these Negro League legends, this is a cool photo showing Paige in his Monarchs uniform and gladly signing for fans at an Old Timers game at Shea Stadium. Taken by photographer Ed Clarity of the New York Daily News, this is a new discovery that is being offered here for the first time ever.
