While this 1910 portrait photograph of Chicago Cubs President Charles Murphy is beautiful and clear, it is not the entire story of this photograph. Issued by the Gilliam's Press Syndicate, they were the first company to include paper captions on the backs of their photos and boy are we glad they did! Murphy makes a declaration against the recent ruling by National League President Thomas Lynch that would ban photographers on the field and announces that "Pictures of the game are half the national past time and as long as I control the west side park and have anything to say the photographers will be as welcome as they were in previous years!" Quite the cool backstory and by the way, the image of Murphy is pretty cool too!
