The story of Ray Chapman is the most tragic in the history of Baseball. On August 17, 1920 he crowded the plate against the Boston Red Sox Pitcher Carl Mays and with a blinding Sun overhead, never saw an inside pitch that hit him square in the Temple. The ball hit so hard that the sound off Chapmans skull combined with the fact that the ball went into Fair Terriroty led to the ball being mistaken for hitting the bat and it was fielded and thrown to first base! Chapman initially seemed to be alright, but within hours he would pass away from the impact of the injury. Mays was distraught and would never live the incident down, and it probably has cost him an induction into the Hall of Fame to this day. This photo is stamped on the back "August 16, 1920" which was the day BEFORE the incident happened. While it would have been common for papers to run stories on Chapman AFTER he died, finding one with a stamp from the day before the accident is asolutely unheard of and as such this is the last image of Chapman known to exist! Condition of this silver gelatin photograph is fantastic with the only flaw being slight corner wear and two small pinholes. Tragic yet historically significant photograph which ranks among the most shocking images ever taken!
