1913 Large photograph of boxing champion Jack Johnson as he trained for his next bout in Paris, France. Crystal clear and bold, this is one of his only foreign news service photographs we have ever seen which is stamped on the back by a Paris photographer. Johnson was overseas for two fights, but in reality he was escaping the racism of America for a bit of a respite in a more progressive country that would accept both him and his white wife. A powerful image with incredible social overtones that is likely the only example in the world. The photo has a rip on the left side with a small chunk reinforced by an archive with some glue years ago.
