Game two of the 1913 World Series was perhaps the greatest pitching duel in history. The two aces of the Giants and Athletics faced off in an epic showdown and boy did they live up to the billing. Christy Mathewson and Eddie Plank matched each other pitch for pitch in shutting down the competition and nine innings was just not enough. Neither pitcher faltered and it stood 0-0 heading into the tenth inning. An unlikely hero drove in the go ahead run, Mathewson himself as he smashed a single off a tired Plank to score Eddie Grant and put the Giants up 1-0. a few pitches later, Mathewson himself would score to make it 2-0 and this oversized image from Underwood and Underwood shows the Giants star after scoring as he looks down to third and lets his teammate know to hold his base. A dejected Athletics catcher (Jack Lapp) looks on helplessly as he knows with Matty on the mound, this one was over! The photograph is a huge work for the technology of the age and is marked from Underwood and Underwood on the front with a huge paper caption on the back. These were used by newspapers to hang outside the news-stands to sell papers for the day and were almost always thrown away making them extremely rare! The image is not bad considering the size and the fact that it was taken from probably 100 feet away and blown up by the photographer and the condition presents pretty well with note to holes on the left side from when this piece was hung at a news-stand in 1913! NOTE, this is a massive blown up image that was taken on a small negative from high above the stadium so the lack of clarity is due to these issues and not from being developed off a duplicate negative.
