We tend to think the Civil Rights Movement started after Jackie Robinson or the 1954 decision of "Brown v. Board of Education", but this is an injustice to the countless men and women, many of them white, who risked their lives to help plant the seeds of equal rights decades earlier. This 1930's photograph and accompanying paper caption are a strong reminder of how long this plight has been at the forefront of American society. A black tenant named John Winters was being evicted from a New York City apartment building, but tenants and equal rights organizations were having none of it. They picketed outside the building with signs and voiced their opinions. The paper caption on the back is a work of Civil Rights history all on it's own, using language that is generally not seen for another twenty or thirty years! A powerful and important piece of history from the Civil Rights Movement and offered here for the first time ever, fresh out of the archives of Underwood and Underwood!
