Absolutely incredible 1913 photograph of black Americans proudly posing in and around a series of floats that were constructed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation (1863). While the location of the parade is not identified, it does not really matter as the symbolism is what is of pinnacle importance here. Each person is dressed in their best clothes and American flags dominate the decorations. It is incredible to think in our polarizing society today that these people, some of them likely former slaves, were so proud to celebrate their freedom despite the continued racism at the time. An important piece of photography and developed as a real photo postcard, this is the only image of it's type we have ever seen!
