While there has always been black influence in all forms of dance and music in America, it was rarely out in the open for the world to see and appreciate. One of the first to break this mold was Alvin Ailey who not only was one of the greatest dancers of his time, but one of the first black and gay choreographers to get national acclaim for his work! The offered double weight image would be important in it's own right, but it is also the work of famous art photographer Carl Van Vechten and bears his stamp on the back and his embossed dry stamp on the front as well. A touch of wear to the lower right corner is the only flaw and this is absolutely a work of art that belongs in a museum or gallery! Dated from 1955, this was early in Ailey's career and is his greatest image we have ever seen!
