The 1986 Challenger explosion is one of those events that shook everyone to their core. As a child of this era, I remember watching it school and witnessing the explosion and not knowing what to think or how to react. It looked like a movie but it was real. I do not know a single person who was of grade school age that did not watch this event live in school. As such, it has left an enduring memory that will never go away and to millions of kids across America it became a "where were you when..." kind of moment. Images of the disaster are quite rare and this is one of the few we have ever seen. This is one of the most famous images from the event and captures the event about a minute before tragedy struck and the shuttle was lifting off the launching pad. An important and perhaps one of the best known photos from the moment that helped define the 1980's. Offered here for the first time ever fresh out of a newspaper archive.
