Today the act of "retiring" a jersey is common, but this photograph from 1925 might be the first time a uniform number was permanently put out of commission in the history of sports. The image shows Red Grange as he packed up his belongings and headed to the NFL and showed off the famous jersey for photographers. The back paper caption noted that the University was placing the jersey among it's trophies and the number would never be worn again! Despite some wear and damage to the upper left and right borders, the image itself is clean and clear. Issued by Underwood and Underwood and this represents the only example of this photograph we have ever seen. There is artistic painting over the number 77 which looks great but could be removed if you desire.
