The 1965 fight between Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) and Sonny Liston which took place in Lewiston, Maine, is one of the seminal events in sports history. While the photo of Clay standing over Liston by Neil Leifer gets most of the love, this photograph from photographer Howard Bingham is almost as well received and has gone down in history as one of the top images of Ali on the planet. The photo shows Clay with a hand raised in victory as he heads to his corner during the fight and the use of angles and light make it an absolute masterpiece of sports art. Taken by renowned photographer and Ali biographer, Howard Bingham, this is the only example of this image we have ever seen in any form. While the print definitely has significant age to it, we feel it is a 1970's example based on the paper and gelatin surface, which does have a significant amount of old silvering. A dark room masterpiece which could be hanging in a museum or gallery, this photograph was highly protected by Bingham and his family over the last thirty years and very few prints were made, selling for $5000-$10000 if they were ever made available to public, and those were modern copies! We have never seen a vintage print for sale and this one is making it's debut here, fresh out of a newspaper archive!
