1954 Photograph of Willie Mays in uniform and playing winter ball in Puerto Rico to stay in shape. Mays was coming off a World Series championship and making the most famous catch in baseball history a few months earlier and had reason to be all smiles. An exceedingly rare image in Santurce uniform that we have never seen before, the image is deep and beautiful with a chip on the left border being the only flaw. Issued by Wide World Photos and with a full paper caption and stamp on the reverse. This style stamp is not known in any reference books we have, but the wording of the main text is consistent with the style that was used from the 1940's through 1954 so we are confident this dates to the 1954 date on the paper caption!
