1869 Dated large cabinet photograph of famous American author, Mark Twain. It is possible that Twain is one of the five or ten most famous Americans of all time and save maybe Abraham Lincoln, the most celebrated man of the entire 19th century. Completely vintage to the era just after the Civil War, this is known to have appeared in print as an engraving in 1870 and this example has a vintage handwritten date of 1869 on the back. The style of cardboard mount and the photographic process used are all consistent to the era, making this perhaps his greatest image ever offered for sale! Recently discovered in a prominent New York archive, this is in fantastic condition and is being offered here for the first time ever!
