Today, Eddie Collins is looked at the squeaky clean honest member of the 1919 White Sox, but this photograph put into context changes some of that perception. Dated on the back from September 3, 1919 (about a month before the famous Black Sox World Series), the photo captures Eddie and his teammate Eddie Murphy gambling on horses, in uniform, right in the middle of what is referred to as a "crucial game" by the photographer. While the caption and photo were clearly a fun and interesting shot at the time, the events of the next month would put ALL gambling events by baseball players under a microscope. Collins would testify against his teammates in 1920 and be held as the shining example of morality in the scandal, but this photograph re-writes some of that narrative we think. Issued by NEA and offered here for the first time ever, this is an important new discovery that is sure to be the topic of much conversation among baseball historians!
