It can be argued that the 1920 World Series unassisted triple play turned by Bill Wambsganss of the Cleveland Indians is the first great baseball "moment" ever captured in photography. Before this specific instance, cameras were normally lugged to the ballpark to capture portraits and still frames that could be used over and over again on stories about specific teams and players. The thought of having a camera ready to snap at the exact moment that something "big" happened was simply not on the minds of early sports photographers. This all changed with THIS photograph. We do not know who took it, but a photographer at the second game of the 1920 World Series had the foresight to set his camera depth at the infield, just in case, and was able to snap his shutter at the moment that Bill Wambsganss tagged Otto Miller to complete the first-ever World Series triple play in history. The photograph was taken by Underwood and Underwood and has a handwritten note and credit on the back and presents well with corner wear from news-room use. The photo also has artistic painting on the front which shows the sequence of the events and follows the path that Wambsganss took to perform the triple play. An incredible piece of baseball history, this is the only vintage example of this photograph we have ever seen in any form!
