In 1923, the biggest prospect in baseball was Jack Bentley of the Giants. He had been purchased from Baltimore and despite having already been in the big leagues before, he was absolutely mashing the ball and pitching like an ace. He was sort of like Shohei Ohtani a hundred years earlier. His numbers between 1920-1922 on the mound were 16-1, 13-2, 12-1 while he also put up batting averages of .371, .412, and .351. McGraw was excited to see him but shortly after this picture was taken he announced that Bentley was too fat and needed to get into shape. While he never found his minor league greatness, he did put up solid numbers on the mound and at the plate for McGraw. A crystal clear and beautiful image in great shape, issued by the International News and with a full caption on the back.
