Images of White Sox reserve infielder Fred McMullin are the toughest to find of all the fabled "Eight Men Out" with dated examples from the World Series almost impossible to find. This example is a companion piece to the Buck Weaver photo we have listed in another lot, issued by the Graphic News Bureau and dated to October 1919, during the famous Black Sox series! There is a paper caption which notes that he may star as a pinch hitter in the upcoming series, but in reality he would star in a different way. People wondered for years why McMullin was involved in the scandal as a reserve player, but now we know he was the most important man for the gamblers to get as he was sent ahead in the final weeks of the regular season to scout out the Reds so his information, right or wrong, was a HUGE deal! One of his finest images ever taken, this presents well with note to a crease and some pinholes from editorial use.
