On September 30, 1921 baseball held a benefit game for the sick and ailing superstar Christy Mathewson who was struggling to overcome tuberculosis after being gassed in WWI. As part of the event a baseball signed by Christy Mathewson, Warren Harding and Babe Ruth was sold for the astronomical sum of $750 to benefit the family and it was sold to a fan named "Truly Warner." Stamped on the back by photographer Paul Thompson, this is perhaps the earliest known image where a signed baseball is the subject of a photograph! A massive new discovery in the hobby, this is a work of art that belongs in a museum or gallery!
