It seems as though the story of Lou Gehrig essentially ends in 1939. He made several symbolic appearances in uniform and with his team after being diagnoses with ALS, and his speech on "Gehrig Day" is now iconic. He deteriorated quickly and almost no images are known of the baseball star after the 1940 season started with this example being one of the only ones ever discovered. On April 24, 1940, he appeared in street clothes, looking noticeably frail, along with his friends in the Yankee dugout including Joe McCarthy. Issued by the International News and stamped on the back with a full paper caption, this is one of only a handful of examples of this photograph we have ever seen!
