Lost in the famous story of the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers and Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier is the saga of the managerial situation. Leo Durocher was suspended before the start of the season for a sex scandal with a young actress and the season started (when Jackie broke the color barrier) with an interim manager. The team finally coerced veteran Burt Shotton to come out of retirement, mostly because he was the perfect man to handle the Jackie Robinson situation, and this image captures the moment he was welcomed to the team. he is seen in the locker room and being surrounded by players, but notably absent is Jackie Robinson who would have been about to play his fourth game in the big leagues! A rare image from an important season, issued by Acme and stamped on the back with a nice paper caption as well.
